Build-Play-Discover. The Japanese console and video games producer, Nintendo has introduced Nintendo Labo, a creative and unique innovation which uses corrugated cardboard as a fundamental component of the console. Nintendo Labo combines the TV-console Nintendo Switch with pre-punched corrugated cardboard sheets which can quickly and easily be transformed into interactive gaming elements.
No tools are required to assemble the cardboard sheets into what are known as Toy-Cons, for example, into a piano, a motorbike or a fishing rod which are then connected to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Labo then enables gamers to use the self-crafted corrugated cardboard Toy-Cons to play songs, win fast races or catch fish.
The innovative features of Nintendo Labo are matched by the diversity of the gaming options of the self-crafted Toy-Con made from corrugated cardboard. The Nintendo “Multi-Kit” includes “Robo-Kit"" and “Vehicles-Kit” with a whole new set of varied and fun games to play. Each of the three kits includes the Nintendo-Switch software card with the compatible software for each kit along with all the necessary components for Toy-Con.
The “Multi-Kit” contains corrugated cardboard die-cuts for five Toy-Con models including RC-car, fishing rod, piano, house and motorbike. In combination with Nintendo Switch the RC-Auto can then be controlled, fish can be caught with the fishing rod and individual songs can be created, recorded and played back on the piano. A little monster lives in the house that can be played with or fed. The motorbike provides a realistic driving experience where many different race tracks can be discovered.
The “Robo-Kit” is a Toy-Con backpack made from corrugated cardboard. Once on the back all the different movements are transferred to the screen and to the robots displayed there and these are then controlled by full physical exertion. For example the robot can walk, bend, change direction or fly through the air. It is even possible to transform the robot into a car. If you pass some so-called tests in the game, you activate new capacities and the robot becomes stronger.
In the “Vehicle Kit” driving a car, flying a plane, steering a submarine and more all become gaming reality with the Toy-Con made from corrugated cardboard. Within one single kit a Toy-Con key can be used to exchange the vehicles at any time. In adventure mode gamers can expect to experience any number of fun missions in ten huge areas ranging from canyons and deserts to urban jungles. The rally mode, racing mode, battle mode and slot car mode complete the exciting gaming offer. Gamers can test and prove their driving skills and even give their vehicles a new coat of paint with the Toy-Con spray can.
The technically demanding corrugated cardboard sheets are produced by THIMM by the best trained production teams and are subject to continuous quality controls. THIMM is the sole supplier to the European market for the modular corrugated cardboard kits for Nintendo Labo.
In order to meet all the customer’s requirements for Toy-Cons made from corrugated cardboard, a new type of corrugated cardboard has been designed uniquely for this product and which incorporates all the design and technical features.
Furthermore, with the Toy-Cons made from corrugated cardboard, Nintendo Labo is demonstrating that the environmentally-friendly packaging material is not only used for traditional packaging and displays, but can also become a fundamental component of the finished product.
Nintendo is combining the analogue and digital worlds with Nintendo Labo and it is a genuine and unique highlight in the console and video market.
