Start of training at THIMM: apprentices became fictitious founders

10.09.2020 Training start 2020 at THIMM in Northeim: 14 technical and commercial trainees started their professional life together at the beginning of August. Together they founded a fictitious start-up and developed an innovative product including a business model.

At THIMM, training begins with the onboarding phase - that is the name of the accompanied introductory phase. During this time, the young professionals get to know the family business, their contact persons and the company's departments and work together as a team on their first tasks. One of these is to fictitiously found a start-up, to create a hypothetical business model for it and to develop an innovative product made of corrugated board. The focus is on working in a team, assuming responsibility and getting to know internal processes and systems.

Corrugated board photo box
This year's fictitiously founded start-up bears the name "time2eventh" and would like to position itself hypothetically in the event sector with sustainable solutions on the market. The first product idea is a photo box from corrugated cardboard - thought as lasting and economical alternative for the well-known attraction on weddings, birthdays and family celebrations. The product bears the name "Picmotion", which is composed of the words "Picture" and "Emotion". The photo box was produced as a real prototype and was presented at the final presentation.

Final presentation by video
The onboarding phase ended with a final presentation, which the audience was able to follow online via video telephony this year due to corona prevention measures. Participants included not only the vocational school teachers but also the training mentors and training officers as well as members of the THIMM management.
While keeping the minimum distance, the trainees presented the fictitious start-up, the business idea as well as the finished product in front of the camera in one of THIMM's large conference rooms.  "The Picmotion photo box is intended to be a sustainable and more cost-effective alternative to conventional photo boxes," reports Lennart Knorre, apprentice industrial clerk. Using a holder in which a tablet or smartphone is inserted, the photo can be triggered by remote control. The motif can be viewed in front of the camera via a mirror mounted in the photo box. The innovative product was well received by the public.

Application phase 2021 has started
The application phase for 2021 is already underway: THIMM is again looking for new applicants for the professions at its locations for the coming year: Industrial mechanic, electronics technician, machine and plant operator, industrial clerk, IT specialist, packaging technologist and media technologist for printing. In addition to demanding tasks, future trainees can expect a high level of personal responsibility. "We attach great importance to our apprentices playing an active role in shaping their training and assuming responsibility," reports Doris Roddewig, training manager at the THIMM Group. "We integrate trainees in all professions into our work processes from the very beginning and assign responsibility to them". Teams of trainers are available to support them in this process. The technical apprentices learn directly at the machines. Commercial trainees receive their own laptop with a headset, so that they can take on tasks in the sales, marketing, personnel, purchasing and other departments.
Anyone who is curious about what is behind the packaging will find an interesting apprenticeship with a future at THIMM. When applying, THIMM focuses on personality: the classic recruitment test was replaced by a video application. This is followed by an invitation to a personal interview, which can also be held via video conference. In addition, trainee trips to other THIMM locations or team training sessions lasting several days take place, if the corona situation permits. Interested parties can find out more at
