Temperature-controlled e-food orders often pose huge challenges to online retailers. For example, if a deep-frozen pizza, yoghurt and vegetables are ordered at the same time, the e-food packaging must meet three different temperature requirements. Only then can e-food be transported safely. Not only is transportation packaging required but also insulting materials and coolant.
In our e-food field test corrugated cardboard was mainly used as the packaging material. The combined proportion of EPS and plastic packaging for e-food was less than 17%. As corrugated cardboard is made from renewable raw materials and is very easy to recycle, many e-food online shops see this as an ecological added value. Materials such as hemp, bubble wrap with and without aluminium coating, air cushions and lamb’s wool are used for insulation. Hard shell cold packs, gel packs and dry ice are used as coolants. Sometimes insulation materials and coolants for e-food packaging present consumers with the challenge of whether to dispose or reuse.
